CULTURAL OCCUPATIONS BY SEX AND AGE

OVERVIEW

According to the 2011 Census, of all persons employed in cultural occupations nationally, 17% (52,354) resided in Queensland. This was 3% of all employed persons in Queensland. The cultural occupation with the highest proportion of persons nationally residing in Queensland was park ranger (30%). In contrast, only 5% of television equipment operators nationally resided in Queensland.

The highest employing cultural occupations were graphic designers (4,076 persons or 8%), ministers of religion (3,208 or 6%), urban and regional planner (2,338 or 5%), architects (2,297 or 4%) and architectural draftspersons (2,171 or 4%).


EMPLOYMENT BY SEX

Of persons employed in cultural occupations in Queensland, 27,684 (53%) were male and 24,670 (47%) were female. There were also more males than females employed in cultural occupations nationally.

The cultural occupations employing 50 persons or more with the largest proportion of males were camera operators (film, television or video) (94%) and sound technicians (94%).

The cultural occupation with the largest proportion of females was make-up artists (97%). Females were noticeably predominant in the cultural occupations of library assistant (91%) and dance teacher (private tuition) (90%).

EMPLOYMENT BY AGE

Persons aged 15 to 24 years made up 12% of all persons employed in cultural occupations in Queensland, which was above the national average of 10%. The cultural occupations with the highest number of persons aged 15 to 24 years in Queensland were graphic designer (635), music teacher (private tuition) (357), dance teacher (private tuition) (328) and architectural draftsperson (309).

Persons aged 55 years and over made up 18% of all persons employed in cultural occupations in Queensland, consistent with the national average. The cultural occupations with the highest number of persons aged 55 years and over were minister of religion (1,105), library assistant (647), architect, (492), librarian (483) and music teacher (private tuition) (378).

Antique dealer was the cultural occupation employing 50 persons or more with the highest proportion of persons aged 55 years and over (58%), followed by civil celebrant (57%). In contrast, only 3% of make-up artists and 2% of multimedia specialists were aged 55 years and over.
